What Is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that removes excess fat cells. In traditional liposuction, tiny incisions are made in the skin to allow the cannula (suction wand) to reach the fatty tissue layer beneath.

A specially formulated fluid is injected into the area to break up the fat, then the fat cells and fluid are removed with manual suction. Dr. Tantillo, a board-certified plastic surgeon, has performed thousands of liposuction procedures on satisfied patients. Once removed, the fat cells do not grow back. However, fat cells do not have a limit as to how much they can enlarge.

Therefore, liposuction will not change your ability to gain or lose weight. Our Boston liposuction for men will change your fat distribution, as the treated areas will always have fewer fat cells. If you maintain your healthy habits of a good diet and exercise to maintain your weight, your liposuction results should last.

Fat Reduction vs Loose Skin Removal

Liposuction for men, alone is generally not suitable for patients that have accomplished major weight loss due to weight loss surgery, such as bariatric surgery or a gastric bypass. Weight loss patients are generally in need of abdominoplasty or skin removal procedures, which may also include liposuction fat removal. See our Post Weight Loss Surgery page for more information on how Dr. Tantillo’s personalized plans for patients who have lost large amounts of weight.

Fat Reduction Vs. Weight Loss

While liposuction for men removes pockets of fat, it is not a “weight loss” procedure. The main reason for this is because removing large amounts of fat through liposuction can result in loose skin, which is not an attractive result. When it comes to weight loss, patients should achieve the desired body weight through a healthy diet and fitness choices before considering liposuction.

Liposuction is designed to fine-tune the results of all your hard work. It is excellent for removing stubborn fat that does not seem to respond to diet or exercise. When the body stores excess fat despite a healthy lifestyle, liposuction is the perfect tool to reshape the body and unlock a fitter physique. Patients should strive to maintain the appropriate body weight after liposuction. A good way to accomplish this is by creating a basic diet and exercise plan prior to getting the treatment done. This will serve as a road map to success. It is imperative for patients that struggle with bodyweight fluctuations to take the appropriate steps to protect their investment in the procedure. As part of your consultation, Dr. Tantillo will review your current nutrition and fitness steps and provide information on how to maximize the benefits of your liposuction.

Liposuction vs Non-invasive Fat Removal

At Clareo Plastic Surgery in Boston, liposuction for men can be discussed as to the pros and cons of each option, so you can choose what is best for you. There is a saying “when you go to Midas you get a muffler.” Well, when you go somewhere that only offers either surgery or non-invasive fat reduction, guess which they will recommend as best for you?

Am I a Candidate for Liposuction?

Men who are at (or near) their ideal body weight and are in good health are good candidates for liposuction. The best candidates are people who have one or just a few areas of unwanted fat. Common areas treated are the abdomen, flanks (love handles), back, chest, and neck.

Liposuction for men is also excellent for enhancing the results you have worked so hard to obtain through diet and exercise. In some patients, stubborn body fat accumulates on areas such as the upper arms, thereby making it difficult to see a toned bicep muscle that may be hiding beneath, for example. Fat removal makes it easier to see toned muscles, helping male patients show off a more sculpted physique.

Liposuction for Men FAQs

If you are in good health, within 25% of your ideal body weight, and have one or more areas of fat that are bothersome to you, yes.

Liposuction is not a weight-loss procedure; it is a body contouring procedure. You will notice little change on the scale; you will see the effects of liposuction in the mirror and feel them when wearing clothes.

Approximately six weeks you will see the difference after liposuction. It takes six months for all the swelling to disappear, the skin tightening to complete, and to see the result.

The SAFELipo technique is used. Tumescent solution is placed into the area to be treated. This minimizes the bruising of the procedure. Then the fat is Separated using a liposuction cannula. Next, the fat is aspirated with liposuction. Finally, the fat is equalized using a liposuction cannula. This technique minimized the risk of contour irregularities, skin damage, and bruising.

The cost of liposuction for men is quite varied and based on the amount of liposuction performed.

Liposuction for Men Procedure

Liposuction for Men Procedure

Liposuction for men is most often an outpatient surgical procedure, meaning you will go home the day of surgery. When you arrive, Dr. Tantillo will go over your plan with you and mark the areas on your body for the surgery. The surgery may involve general anesthesia or local anesthesia, depending on the area that is treated and the size of the target site. At Clareo Plastic Surgery, it is our goal to provide patients with the utmost comfort and safety during the procedure.

General anesthesia requires that the patient has a trusted family member, friend, or aide present the day of surgery to drive them home. It is also beneficial to have someone present to help out with daily activities for the first 24 hours after the procedure, as areas may be tender and sore and you will likely want to rest and recover. With that said, all patients will be able to walk on the same day as the procedure; in fact, walking encourages good circulation and promotes healing.

Liposuction Recovery

The liposuction for men recovery time varies by the number of areas treated. However, most patients are back to their normal routine within a few days of the procedure. Patients are often asked to wear a compression garment for the first six weeks after the surgery. This garment can be comfortably worn under any type of clothing. Patients generally can return to strenuous activity or exercise three to four weeks after the procedure.

The swelling will increase for approximately three days after the procedure and then start to decrease. The compression garment aims to reduce swelling and promote optimal skin retraction. In addition to wearing liposuction compression garments, it is essential to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. Swelling after liposuction is caused when fluid leaves the cells and therefore it is not available to the body. So it is possible to become dehydrated and swollen at the same time. Over several days the body will take fluid back into the cells and you will simply urinate the fluid away.

Liposuction Results

Liposuction for men results take time to become noticeable. The initial swelling makes it hard to see the results at first. As the swelling subsides, you will not notice substantial improvement happening until about three weeks after the procedure. By six weeks after the procedure you will see results; however, subtle improvement and skin tightening continue for six months.

Since liposuction is a surgical fat removal procedure, the results are considered permanent. The fat cells that are removed as part of the procedure will not come back. However, it is important for patients to understand that liposuction does not prevent new fat cells from growing. Weight gain can affect the results.
