Making Wishes Come True with a Mommy Makeover

Nothing compares with motherhood. The experiences changed your life; they also changed your body. The toll on your body from pregnancy and childbearing may include sagging breasts, loose abdominal skin, unwanted fat deposits, and a weakened abdomen. The more times you have given birth, the more your body is affected. Learn more about our Boston Mommy Makeover procedure at Clareo Plastic Surgery.

Mommy Makeover Boston

What is a mommy makeover?

A Mommy Makeover in Boston is a procedure designed to address changes in the body that are often associated with pregnancy, such as excess fat, sagging breasts, and loose skin around the abdomen.

Combining procedures for the breasts and body, our Boston Mommy Makeover patients often choose a breast lift and/or breast augmentation, a tummy tuck, and/or liposuction for their customized procedure. In addition, some women may opt for a breast reduction or a Brazilian butt lift. However, your Mommy Makeover is whatever you want it to be and can include almost any combination of surgical or nonsurgical procedures.

Am I a good candidate for a Mommy Makeover?

There are critical factors to consider before undergoing invasive surgery. During your consultation for a Mommy Makeover Boston plastic surgeon, Dr. Tantillo will discuss all your options and conduct a thorough examination to determine if the Mommy Makeover is a suitable choice for you. Essential factors to consider include:

Timing

Are you done having children? New mothers must have fully recovered from childbirth before having surgery. Additionally, if you are still breastfeeding, certain injectables must be avoided. It is highly recommended to wait until your breasts return to a stable shape and size. Otherwise, it may become difficult to maintain your new surgical results. Also, significant weight fluctuations will dramatically alter your post-surgical results.

Will you have help?

After surgery, it is vital you have help and assistance for household tasks, but you will also need adequate childcare if you have small children. While you are recovering, you will not be allowed to pick up anything over five to ten pounds for four to six weeks after your surgery. Needlessly lifting objects or trying to care for a child could cause you serious injury.

What is included in a Mommy Makeover?

Your Mommy Makeover will be tailored to meet your cosmetic goals and concerns. Generally, a Mommy Makeover includes a combination of procedures for the breasts and body. Some of the most common surgical options include:

Breast augmentation:

After childbearing, the breasts may take on a deflated or flattened appearance. This is especially true for mothers who nursed their children. Breast augmentation can help restore breast volume and create fuller, more youthful-looking breasts. At Clareo Plastic Surgery, we offer breast augmentation using silicone or saline implants and fat transfer breast augmentation.

Breast Reduction

Some women may want to reduce the size of their breasts post-childbearing. A breast reduction removes excess fat and skin so that the breasts are more proportionate to the body. The reduction of your breasts depends on your breast composition and the current size of your breasts. You may not get the exact cup size you want, but your surgeon will determine the best options for you. Many breast reduction patients end up going down one or two cup sizes.

Breast lift:

It’s very common for women to notice sagging breasts after having children. Drooping breasts can also occur as a normal part of aging, as well as with dramatic weight loss. A breast lift can restore the breasts to a more elevated position on the chest wall. This creates a perkier appearance that is often associated with youth. Breast lifts can be performed alone or with breast augmentation for women who want to increase their chest size in addition to improving the breast shape and position.

Brazilian Butt Lift

A Brazilian butt lift transfers unwanted fat from one part of the body to the buttocks. The result is fuller and better-contoured buttocks. Likewise, fat vacuumed away during liposuction is collected and transferred to the buttocks. The final result is a more youthful shape and appearance.

Tummy tuck:

During pregnancy, the abdominal muscles stretch to accommodate your growing baby. After the baby is born, however, you may be left with loose, sagging skin around your waistline and weak muscle tone. While abdominal exercise can help some, only a tummy tuck can remove extra skin and fat around the midsection while tightening the abdominal wall. This will create a flat, tight stomach that looks lean and fit. In addition, a tummy tuck is the only way to repair the stomach muscles in women who have diastasis recti, or separation of the abdominal muscles.

Liposuction:

Gaining a healthy amount of weight during pregnancy is normal and encouraged. However, once the baby is born, many women struggle to get back to their pre-pregnancy weight. Fat often accumulates around the midsection, thighs, and hips during pregnancy and can be hard to lose after childbirth. Liposuction uses a vacuum mechanism to suction away stubborn fat from almost any area of the body. It is often used during tummy tuck surgery to slim the waistline, but can also be performed alone on the thighs, arms, flanks, back, and buttocks.

What are the benefits of a Mommy Makeover?

The advantage of undergoing several surgeries simultaneously is that you are healing concurrently from all your procedures at one time. The Mommy Makeover is designed to target multiple problem areas at once. Boston plastic surgeon Dr. Tantillo offers personalized attention to achieve your aesthetic goals. Benefits of a Mommy Makeover include:

  • Repairing stretched areolas
  • Correcting breast asymmetry
  • Enhancing the shape, volume, and size of your breasts
  • Removing excess skin and repairing the abdomen muscles

While many patients have similar body concerns they want to be addressed at Clareo Plastic Surgery, your treatment plan is uniquely designed for you in mind.

When is the best time to get a Mommy Makeover?

All women should wait at least six months after giving birth before undergoing the procedure. Consider a Mommy Makeover only after you decide you are not planning to have any more children.

While it is possible to safely carry a pregnancy after a Mommy Makeover, the effects of the Mommy Makeover will diminish. If you opt for breast augmentation or reduction, you may not have the ability to nurse another baby. Wait several months after breastfeeding your last child before considering a Mommy Makeover. In addition, your weight should have stabilized after following a diet and exercise regimen. A Mommy Makeover is many things, but it is not a weight-loss procedure. When you reach your goal weight, that is the right time to schedule a Mommy Makeover.

Mommy Makeover Recovery

The recovery time for Mommy Makeover surgery depends on the procedures chosen. However, some patients spend one night after surgery in the surgery center or hospital. A Mommy Makeover is major surgery. You will need someone to drive you home after your discharge from the hospital.

You will likely feel tired and sore immediately after surgery, but many of our patients feel well enough to be up and walking by the evening of their Mommy Makeover. It’s important to have someone help you around the house for one to two weeks after your procedure. Office work and light aerobic activity can usually be resumed in about two to three weeks. However, you will be asked to avoid strenuous activities and exercise for up to six weeks. Most of our Boston Mommy Makeover patients take at least two weeks off work after the procedure. Full recovery takes between four to eight weeks, depending on the procedures performed and the individual patient.

Mommy Makeover Recovery Tips

After you get home from your Mommy Makeover, you need to rest and recuperate, which means focusing on yourself rather than the needs of others. If possible, ask friends or family members to watch your children or hire a childcare provider during the initial recovery period. The same holds true for performing household chores. Additional recovery tips for major surgery include:

  • Consume a healthy diet by eating plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean meats to help your body heal.
  • Stay hydrated. Your doctor may have prescribed pain medications. It is important to take those medications as directed and often with a full glass of water and something to eat. In addition, flushing toxins out of your body it will enable your body to heal expeditiously.
  • Don’t try to exercise too soon. Strenuous exercise could pull a suture or cause you significant pain. Walking at a slow pace is recommended, especially right after surgery.

Do not try to do too much, too soon. Your body will tell you what it can and cannot do at a particular point, so listen to it.

Mommy Makeover Scars

Your post-surgical scars will fade over time and are barely visible or hidden by clothing.

Depending on your procedures, all of your surgical scars are hidden discreetly. This means you can wear something as revealing as a bikini and not be noticeable. Remember bikinis?! They are a possibility again after recovery from a Mommy Makeover. Tummy tuck incisions are made as low as possible so that the scar is invisible when wearing a bikini or lowrise underwear. Breast scarring will depend on the type of procedure, but all such scarring is hidden by a bra or bikini top. Liposuction scars are minimal and barely noticeable post-healing.

How much does a Mommy Makeover cost?

Payment and financing options are available for your convenience.

The price of a Mommy Makeover varies from patient to patient based on the procedures performed and the extent of the procedures performed. A Mommy Makeover is considered a cosmetic procedure, and typically insurance will not cover the costs. There are exceptions for specific procedures. For instance, if overly large breasts are causing chronic back pain, your insurance may pay for a breast reduction. However, we recommend checking with your insurance provider about your coverage options.

Mommy Makeover FAQs

While the length of time for a Mommy Makeover depends on the types of procedures, the surgery is usually completed within four to five hours. How long it takes to perform a Mommy Makeover varies by the number of operations involved.

Mommy makeovers are done under general anesthesia. The doctor will prescribe medication to ease discomfort while you recover. You can expect some pain and discomfort while you recover. It is imperative to follow post-operative instructions to minimize your pain and heal properly.

The results of your Mommy Makeover are progressive and will continue to evolve over time. By about six weeks, most of the swelling should have subsided, and you should be enjoying your new shape. If you eat right and exercise regularly, the results of your Mommy Makeover can last for many years.

Most women can begin light exercise, such as walking, within a week or two of surgery. By the third or fourth week, additional exercise, such as yoga, may be added. Expect to wait six to eight weeks and receive a doctor’s clearance before engaging in more vigorous exercise.

This will vary based on your particular surgical plan and your body’s ability to heal. Typically, you will need to avoid sleeping on your side for at least six weeks following surgery. We will review your plan during your consultation and let you know a more precise timeline for your recovery.

As with any surgery, there are risks associated with a Mommy Makeover, but complications are rare. Side effects from your surgery include bleeding, implant leakage or capsular contraction, infection, nipple sensation loss, poor incision healing, and deep vein thrombosis.
