Dr. Michael Tantillo

With the new year approaching, I’ve started to make some predictions about plastic surgery trends for Boston in 2019.

From researching innovative minimally invasive treatments to learning new techniques for standard procedures, it’s always my job to be thinking ahead. Here’s my best guess as to what the future holds:

  1. More men will be getting cosmetic treatments.
    Women aren’t the only ones who want to look good and feel confident. In recent years, men have been taking up a larger section of the plastic surgery market, and I predict this segment will continue to grow in 2019. Men often have different concerns than women when it comes to their appearance, and they seek out cosmetic treatments for different reasons. In addition to wanting to look good, men also want to stay competitive in the workplace. Men want their appearance to convey health, confidence, and professionalism so that they maintain their competitive edge against younger, fresher talent. I often see male patients for procedures like Botox, rhinoplasty, and liposuction. Breast reduction for men is also extremely popular because it gives men a flat, firm chest and reduces the look of “man boobs.”
  2. Injectables will continue to rise.
    The popularity of injectable treatments like dermal fillers and BOTOX Cosmetic has soared in the last 10 years, and I predict they will increase again next year. Injectables are popular for a number of reasons:

    * They provide almost instant results.

    * There is little to no downtime.

    * Side effects are minimal.

    * The results are long-lasting.

    Injectables can also be used to treat many different concerns. BOTOX, for example, is excellent for smoothing facial expression lines on the forehead and around the eyes. Dermal fillers are a great way to add volume to areas of the face that are hollow or thin, such as the lips, cheeks, or under eyes. The result is a fresh, youthful, rested appearance.

  3. Treatments will become more nuanced.
    There’s been a big push for plastic surgery to create results that look more natural and less visibly altered. As part of this trend, I predict that treatments will become more nuanced to provide small tweaks to a person’s appearance, rather than more drastic changes. Most of my patients want to look like themselves, only better. They aren’t trying to look like their favorite celebrity. They aren’t even trying to look like the 20-year-old version of themselves. They want to look their best at the point in their life they’re in right now. And through smaller, more refined enhancements, I’m able to achieve that.
  4. There will be more options for non-invasive body contouring.
    Non-surgical body contouring procedures like CoolSculpting have attracted a lot of fans due to their quick treatments and minimal downtime. In 2019, I anticipate that there will likely be even more options to reduce fat without surgery. As these treatments become available, however, it’s important to remember that the latest-and-greatest technology isn’t always the best option. For example, I find that many people who want CoolSculpting would actually benefit more from traditional liposuction. Rather than hopping on the bandwagon of the latest craze, make sure you meet with a board-certified plastic surgeon near Boston who can thoroughly evaluate you and provide the best treatment plan for your goals.
  5. Consumers will be more informed.
    Today, consumers are more informed about plastic surgery than ever before. That’s because information is more readily available online and on social media. Websites and blogs allow patients to easily access real reviews and ratings of almost every cosmetic procedure available. You can also shop for doctors, browse before-and-after photos, and get answers to your questions from actual doctors. Having this much information at your fingertips allows for more thorough research before your procedure. It also educates you on the benefits and risks of your procedure and helps set more realistic expectations about the results and the recovery period. And as consumers become more informed, they will likely make better choices about their care, resulting in a safer procedure and better results.
