A Mommy Makeover can help restore your body to its pre-pregnancy shape and help you feel more confident in your appearance. But before undergoing a Mommy Makeover, there are a few important questions to consider. Here are a few suggestions to help you prepare for your consultation and overall experience.

What is a Mommy Makeover?

A Mommy Makeover is a combination of personalized cosmetic procedures designed to help women address the physical changes that occur after pregnancy. It can include breast augmentation with breast implants or fat transfer, breast reduction, breast lift, Brazilian butt lift, tummy tuck, liposuction, or any other procedure that helps you to feel more confident in your post-baby body. These can be performed together or separately, depending on your needs and goals; and what is safe for you. Combined procedures minimize your downtime and allow you to see your overall results more quickly.

Will I have scars after my Mommy Makeover?

Any incision in the skin heals with a scar. While each patient’s genetics play a role in scar formation, you can have confidence that your Clareo surgeons will do everything possible to ensure that your scars are as inconspicuous as possible. We know that most of our tummy tuck patients want to be able to wear a two-piece bathing suit after surgery, and we aim to make sure they can do so with confidence!

Do I have to modify my medication and supplement regimen before my Mommy Makeover?

When considering a Mommy Makeover, review your current medication and supplement regimen with your Clareo team. We will tell you which medications are safe to take in the time around surgery and which should be paused or adjusted. Blood thinners, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, fish oils, and diet pills are usually paused or modified before and immediately after surgery; however, do not stop any prescription medications without first discussing them with your Clareo team.

How should I prepare for a Mommy Makeover and recovery?

We know that your Mommy Makeover is a big investment of time, money, and trust. Your Clareo team will help you before, during, and after your procedure to achieve the best results possible. Some general things to keep in mind about your surgery are:

Ideal or Goal Weight

Getting as close to your goal or ideal weight before surgery will optimize the contouring your surgeon is able to achieve and not limit the amount of liposuction that is performed. There is a limit to the amount of fat that can safely be removed in any given operation.

Allow for Time to Heal

Swelling will persist for weeks to months after surgery while your body heals. If you have body contouring surgery, such as an abdominoplasty or liposuction, you should wear a compression garment for at least four weeks after surgery. We will provide a compression garment. Depending on the surgeries, you should avoid strenuous activities for four to six weeks so you don’t prolong swelling and delay healing.

An Environment for Healing

It is important to prepare an environment for healing. Create a relaxing space with soft bedding and pillows, a recliner, and activities like reading or watching tv/movies.

Ask for Help

Having a friend or family member on hand to help with basic tasks such as bathing, laundry, and grocery shopping can make the recovery process much easier. There is no shame in asking for help, and it will go a long way to ensuring you have the best recovery possible.

Lymphatic Massage

We strongly encourage our liposuction patients to start lymphatic massage within the first week of surgery. Lymphatic massage helps swelling decrease more quickly, keeps the treated area smooth, and allows patients to feel better and see their results more quickly. Our Clareo team can assist you with arranging postoperative lymphatic massage sessions.

What is the downtime after a Mommy Makeover?

After a Mommy Makeover, your recovery timeline will vary depending on the specific procedures performed and your individual healing process. Generally speaking, you can expect to take off at least two weeks from work and should refrain from strenuous physical activity for up to six weeks. For Moms with young children, you are going to need help with lifting, such as in and out of the crib or bath. We find that some Moms hire assistance with childcare during their recovery.

After a Mommy Makeover

A Mommy Makeover is one of the most gratifying procedures our Boston plastic surgeons perform because the results are transformative, and patients are so happy. The changes and results of a Mommy Makeover last a lifetime. You can look forward to letting your confidence shine!
